Public Rights of Way

Public Rights of Way (PRoW) in Welney parish—including public footpaths, bridleways, and byways—are publicly accessible linear routes that cross private and public land. These routes are legally protected highways, and the network within the village and surrounding fenlands is maintained by Norfolk County Council.

Types of Rights of Way in Welney

  • Public Footpaths: For walkers only, typically marked with yellow waymarker arrows.

  • Public Bridleways: Open to walkers, horse riders, and cyclists, typically marked with blue arrows.

  • Byways & Restricted Byways: Accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders, and sometimes non-mechanically propelled vehicles.

Important Local Access Notes

  • WWT Welney Wetland Centre: There is no public footpath access across the river directly into the WWT Welney reserve; entry requires going through the visitor centre on Station Road. However, there is a prominent public bridleway that runs along the southeast bank of the New Bedford River, connecting down into the local road networks.

  • Seasonal Conditions: Welney and the surrounding Ouse Washes are highly prone to winter flooding. During periods of high water, the Wash Road (A1101) and adjacent footpaths can become impassable, and council access restrictions may apply.

How to View the Welney PRoW Map

To see the exact course of each footpath and bridleway across Welney's fens and riverbanks, you can utilize the Norfolk County Council Interactive Map, which details the exact boundaries of every registered path in the King's Lynn & West Norfolk area. Additionally, you can find local map overlays and route guides using the UK PRoW Index for Welney or by exploring the Footpath Route Planner

Welney Flood Watch

The Welney Flood Watch Facebook page is managed by volunteers and the information provided is intended to inform interested parties as to the up to date position of the flooding of the A1101 road through the village of Welney, Norfolk. Whilst best endeavours are made to be as accurate as possible, the team accept no responsibility for any liability or damage caused as a result of the information provided.

Bus Shelter

Welney has one bus shelter on Main Street near Chestnut Avenue.

Local Planning Applications

Parish councils are statutory consultees in the UK planning system. They have no legal power to approve or reject applications. Instead, they review proposals and submit recommendations (support, object, or no comment) to the local planning authority (e.g., Kings Lynn Borough Council), which makes the final decision

Speed Awareness Monitor (SAM2)

The Speed Awareness Monitor,  is not a camera and doesn’t take images of the vehicles!

It records the time and speed of every vehicle that passes that position.

If it doesn’t light up, you are under 27mph, and it doesn’t indicate the speed if above 45mph, but still records them!

We can use this data to assist us when we need to comment on a planning application or to show the Highway’s department the traffic data if requested.

General Maintenance

The Parish Council is responsible for general maintenance and upkeep of the village. If you would like to report any issues, please contact the Clerk.

Maintenance of the roads, for example dealing with potholes, is the responsibility of the County Council Highways Department. Please report any issues about potholes directly via Norfolk County Council's online reporting.
